Mayor Michael Bloomberg's school closure policy has targeted schools whose students are disproportionately poor, have special needs, are English-language learners or are older students who have been held back.

A proposed overhaul of the cash-strapped Philadelphia Public School District would cut costs by closing 64 schools and dividing the remaining schools into "achievement networks" that will be run by a mix of district educators and outside institutions like charter management organizations.

Let's hear it for the student advocates in Chicago fighting for student input in teacher evaluations! Thanks to the advocacy efforts of groups likes Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE), the Chicago Public Schools announced that its new teacher evaluation system will include a pilot of student feedback at all CPS high schools.

Kids in poverty have less access to the quality opportunities and services they need to keep up academically with their wealthier peers. So there's no reason we shouldn't be be providing every student access to the heath care, summer enrichment programs, school meals, counseling services, etc. they need to succeed in school.

"Giftedness" is equally distributed throughout any given population. Why then do so many districts and counties across the country disproportionately identify enroll more White students than students of color in gifted programs and thereby give them better access to educational opportunities and quality teachers?
